When Sound Becomes Colour: Black Lotus Explores Synesthesia, Memory, and Dreams in “In a Room Full of Dreams”

New single from the forthcoming EP In a Room Full of Dreams transforms the blurred boundaries between sound, image, memory, dreams, and emotion into atmospheric dark synth-pop.

Those questions inhabit “In a Room Full of Dreams,” the new title single from Black Lotus’ forthcoming concept EP of the same name. Arriving in stores on September 14, the song moves through atmospheric synth-pop, dark pop and alternative electronic textures, exploring the strange territory where perception, memory, dreams, and imagination begin to overlap.

 

At the centre of the song is the idea of synesthesia, the neurological phenomenon in which stimulation of one sense can involuntarily evoke another. Sound may be experienced as colour. Words can suggest shapes, textures, or spatial forms. Numbers and letters may carry their own colours or personalities. For Black Lotus, synesthesia becomes more than a scientific curiosity. It offers a way of thinking about music itself: a medium capable of turning invisible experiences into landscapes.

 

That idea extends across the forthcoming EP. “When Sound Becomes Colour” explores the crossing of sensory boundaries, while “Synthesia” takes its name from a deliberate play on synesthesia, merging interconnected perception with the project’s synthesizer-driven electronic language.

 

“In a Room Full of Dreams” imagines memory almost physically. A room becomes filled with traces of another person; fragments of experience and objects that seem to retain emotional meaning after their original moment has passed. Absence and presence coexist. The past is no longer simply remembered; it is sensed. That dream logic is reflected in the production. Lush, layered synthesizers, electronic percussion and melodic vocals move through an atmosphere that is simultaneously wistful and dreamlike. The track combines dark synth-pop and alt-pop with rock-inflected edges, allowing reflective melancholy to exist within its electronic soundscape. Its dreamy electronic atmosphere places the song in territory reminiscent of artists such as Purity Ring and BANKS, particularly in its dreamy electronic atmosphere, lush, layered synthesizers and introspective mood.

 

Thai Black performs the vocals on ‘In a Room Full of Dreams,’ following the vocal duet with Geert Coppens on the EP’s first release, ‘Dreams of Snakes.' The single also continues Black Lotus’ collaboration with Belgian musician Geert Coppens of Micrart and Micrart Studios, whose history in Belgium’s experimental electronic, darkwave and coldwave scenes includes projects such as Twilight Ritual, Autumn, and Linear Movement. Coppens previously joined Black Lotus as the featured vocalist with Thai Black on “Dreams of Snakes,” the first release from the current EP.

 

The result reflects a recurring quality in the music of Black Lotus: songs that can be introspective without becoming motionless, and dreamlike without losing their physical energy. Dreams themselves operate in much the same way. A remembered voice can become a place. A colour can carry an emotion.

 

The room itself also reaches backward in time. Filled with records and album covers, it recalls an era when music arrived not only as sound, but as a physical and visual object: artwork held in the hands, studied while a record played, and eventually bound to the memories surrounding the music. That relationship between sound and image becomes part of the EP’s exploration of perception. Once inside the room, you enter analogue time, where the past remains present through records, images and remembered sound, and music begins to take on colour, shape, and atmosphere. That unstable border between inner and outer worlds forms the heart of “In a Room Full of Dreams.”

 

With its combination of cinematic atmosphere, surreal imagery, and lush electronic textures, “In a Room Full of Dreams” continues Black Lotus’s exploration of the psychological spaces where music, perception, dreams, memory, and visual imagination intersect.
